  The South Carolina Department of Corrections protects the citizens by confining offenders in controlled facilities and by providing rehabilitative, self-improvement opportunities to prepare inmates for their re-integration into society. • DEPT OF JUVENILE JUSTICE

  
  

  DJJ is the state agency responsible for providing rehabilitation and custodial care for the state鈥檚 juveniles who are on probation, incarcerated, or on parole for a criminal or status offense. The mission of the agency to protect the public and reclaim juveniles through prevention, community programs, education and rehabilitative services in the least restrictive environment. DJJ operates a special school district with fully accredited academic programs, serving approximately 900 students in grades 4-12 each day. All juveniles in the care of the DJJ attend school while detained or incarcerated. DJJ's school district and schools function just like other school districts and schools in South Carolina - with a district superintendent, principals, teachers, directors, and program coordinators. However, DJJ's schools differ from other South Carolina schools in several ways: Schools are in session year-round (enabling students to make up absences and close learning gaps). DJJ's school district has no local tax base, relying exclusively on state (EFA is calculated at 70%) and federal funding. Classes are geared to meet the individual needs of each student. The DJJ school district is responsible for all educational programs operated by the agency, including those in private vendor programs and alternative school sites in community residential placement facilities.

We will provide opportunities for students to develop creative and critical problem-solving skills, as innovative learners, to meet dynamic global changes. We will maximize our use of resources through collaborative partnerships with our community, our business and education partners. District Five's students will be prepared to pursue excellence for tomorrow's challenges.

  Richland One is the state's seventh-largest school district. We educate 23,000 students who represent 41 countries and as many languages. Geographically, our district stretches over 482 square miles. Our 50 schools and centers are nestled in urban, suburban and rural communities, from downtown Columbia to St. Andrews to Lower Richland. Richland One is one of the area's largest employers with more than 4,000 dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff. Our schools, students and employees are supported by a community with a deeply-rooted history of cherishing education.

  The South Carolina Public Charter School District (SCPCSD) was created through the South Carolina Charter School Act. The legislation created a legitimate avenue for parents, teachers, and community members to take responsible risks and create new, innovative, and more flexible ways of educating children within the public school system. The goal of any charter school is to encourage academic excellence, educational improvement, and cultural diversity in South Carolina. The mission of the SCPCSD is to improve student learning and increase learning opportunities in South Carolina through the creation and implementation of innovative, high-quality charter schools. Ultimately, we strive to assist South Carolina in achieving and maintaining academic excellence.
