Beacon Preparatory School is a 6-8 grade charter middle school based in Bloomington, Minnesota. Originally named Veritas, it started in Plymouth, MN as a sister school to Beacon Academy, a K-5 charter school. In the winter of 2007-2008 school year, its sponsor Friends of Education, notified Seven Hills Classical Academy (a K-5 charter school also sponsored by Friends of Education) that the school was looking for a new home due to changes in the relationship with its sister K-5 school partner--Beacon Academy. At the time, Seven Hills was interested in expanding its charter to eighth grade and adding Beacon Prep would help fulfill that objective without having to re-submit its charter agreement with the MN department of Education-which can be a long and laborious proces. In the 2008-2009 school year, Beacon Prep officially moved to Bloomington, MN and was the impetus for the expansion of the current facility--Cedar Valley Church. The school began with a 6th grade, then 7th and finally all three grades in 2010-2011 school year--and graduated its first class in the spring of 2011. Beacon Prep is a Classical Core Knowledge middle school, chartered 6th thru 12th grade. It shares newly remodeled and expanded facilites with Seven Hills Classical Academy and occupies the second floor in arguably one of the best charter school facilities in the state of MN. It has recently renewed it's authorizer's (Friends of Education) contract as well as a strong and stable lease agreement with Cedar Valley Church. Overall strong student proficiency and learning growth scores are postive outcomes that key stakeholders--parents, teacher, leadership and the Board of Directors focus on when evaluating the progress of the school. The strategic plan, curriculum plans and classroom managment and size all are key factors that help contribute and the scores in both proficiency and growth. The 2009-2010 test score results showed the school outperformed its comparision school and Beacon Prep in both proficiency and growth AND ranked in the top three of all Friends of Education schools--that includes some of the best academic performing schools in the state of MN. With positive academic outcomes and a strong foundation of facilities, leadership and enrollment as a backdrop, Beacon Prep still has room to grow. With its new full-time director on-board, additional emphasis will be placed on executing the curriculum plan, creating the best overall experience for its students and community while keeping high expectations for academic achievement at the forefront of future activites as it prepares its students for high school and beyond.
